Tuesday, 16 January 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

A retired secretary of a cooperative society was shot dead in Bamiyana village of Bareilly district, an official said on Monday.

The incident occurred within the limits of Bhamora police station when the deceased, identified as Brahmapal Singh (70), went to check his crops and was shot dead.

“We received information that an elderly citizen named Brahampal Singh (70) from the village was found lying near his farm with a bullet injury and he had died on the spot on Sunday evening. Upon receiving the information, officials reached the spot and inspected it,” said Bareilly’s Superintendent of Police (Rural) Mukesh Chandra Mishra.  He said a case was registered on the basis of the complaint filed by the relatives of the deceased and further investigation was underway.

In another incident in Unnao, a dispute over collection of money led to the murder of one person while his brother was critically injured.

The accused, identified as Kale Khan, attacked a local farmers’ leader, Vinod Kashyap and his brother, Durga Shankar Kashyap, as they were collecting donations for an upcoming event at the village temple.

Vinod succumbed to injury while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The event was scheduled for January 22, 2024 to mark the pran pratishtha of Lord Ram at Ram temple in Ayodhya. The police, however, denied the communal angle in a statement on the incident. Police said the two groups got into a fight over money.

Meanwhile, a 26-year-old civil services aspirant ended his life by setting himself afire before jumping off the third floor of his house in Jhansi, police said on Monday.

Police said the deceased, Mayur Rajak, had been preparing for the civil services examination since 2019 after completing an engineering course, but could not succeed.

Mayur was living with his mother, Anita Rajak, in the Sipri Bazar area of Jhansi. His father, Manoj Kumar Rajak, is a sub-inspector in the Railway Protection Force and is posted in Firozabad while his elder sister, Akanksha Rajak, is pursuing doctorate in Bengaluru.

According to police, Mayur and his mother went to their respective rooms after dinner on Saturday and a few hours later, Mayur set himself afire and jumped off the third floor of his house.

A neighbour spotted the body outside the house and informed the police. The cops reached Mayur’s house and informed his mother, who was till then unaware about her son’s death.

Sipri Bazar Station Officer VP Pandey said, “We have found a suicide note in Mayur’s study room on the second floor. He did not mention any specific reason for taking the extreme step. In the note, he wished that his mortal remains be immersed in the Ganga where the river is clean.”
