Punjab CM launches Rs 176.29-cr project to boost border security, flood protection

Taking a significant step to fortify security along the international borders, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday approved Rs 176.29 crore project focused on flood protection for Border Outposts (BOPs). The initiative aimed at protecting crucial defense installations along the international boundary, with 28 identified sites spanning across the districts of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Pathankot, and Gurdaspur.

During a high-level meeting of the State Flood Control Board, the Chief Minister emphasized the strategic importance of these flood protection works, particularly as the BOPs are prone to flooding from rivers like Ravi, Sutlej, and Ujh. In recent years, state funds have been rerouted to address flooding threats to national defense installations, but this comprehensive project seeks to provide a long-term solution.

“The protection of Border Outposts is not just a state priority but a national security imperative. Given the vulnerability of these areas to floods, we have devised this project to secure them, ensuring that the country’s defense infrastructure remains uncompromised,” Mann said, adding that the project will cover over 8695 hectares of land across the five districts, offering a robust defense against flood-related damages.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the Border Security Force (BSF) and Army had been consistently urging the State to prioritize protection for BOPs. With Punjab being a border state, any compromise on its defense installations could have far-reaching consequences. Therefore, this project is a crucial step in safeguarding both the security and territorial integrity of the nation.

The sites have been jointly identified by the State Government, BSF, and Army to address the most vulnerable areas. The district of Amritsar will witness the highest number of sites covered under this project, with 11 locations targeted for flood protection. Ferozepur will have seven sites, Tarn Taran three, Gurdaspur five, and Pathankot two.

In terms of infrastructure, the project will see the construction of embankments totaling 1788 feet in Tarn Taran, 1050 feet in Ferozepur, and 2875 feet in Gurdaspur. Additionally, 29,140 feet of revetment, 22 spurs, and 95 studs will be installed to further bolster the flood defenses.

Mann stressed that with the growing challenges of climate change, protecting border infrastructure has become increasingly urgent. The project not only reinforces Punjab’s preparedness but also underscores the state’s commitment to national security.
