Punjab CM flags off delegation of 72 school teachers to Finland

Saturday, 19 October 2024 | PNS | Chandigarh

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday flagged off a delegation of 72 primary school teachers to Finland for specialized training. Mann, addressing the teachers during a flag-off event in Delhi, emphasized, “You are not only shaping the minds of students but also nurturing their characters to become compassionate and responsible citizens.” The initiative marked a significant commitment by the Punjab Government to transform the education landscape and ensure that students receive a world-class education in their home state.

Mann highlighted that the training in Finland is not just a journey abroad; it represents an opportunity to learn innovative pedagogical techniques and best practices from one of the most effective education systems in the world. He stressed the importance of education as the backbone of society, stating that every child, regardless of their background, deserves access to high-quality learning.

Finland was chosen for this training because of its globally recognized student-centered educational model that emphasizes creativity, innovation, and teacher autonomy — qualities the Punjab government aims to integrate into its schools. Mann expressed hope that exposure to the Finnish education system would allow teachers to implement new teaching strategies that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity in their classrooms.

During the event, Mann also noted the introduction of Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) in Punjab's government schools. He stated that this initiative enhances parental involvement in children's education and builds a supportive learning environment. “We will be holding a mega PTM soon, and I’m proud to share that 157 students from Punjab have cleared the IIT entrance test,” he added, showcasing the potential for success within the state’s education system.

Punjab Government has already sent over 500 teachers for training in Singapore, Finland, and prestigious institutions within India. “Our sole motive is to empower students in government schools to compete with their counterparts educated in elite institutions. The competence and ability of teachers directly reflect the quality of learning,” Mann asserted.

In line with this vision, the Punjab Government has established the International Education Affairs Cell (IEAC) within the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). This cell aims to enhance the skills of teachers and school administrators through international exposure and training. Mann stated, “We have organized trips to renowned educational institutions in Switzerland, Singapore, and even Harvard and Oxford to enlighten our teachers about best practices.”

Mann urged the teachers to return as ambassadors of change, sharing their knowledge and experiences with colleagues and students. “Your training in Finland will not only benefit you but also thousands of students who will gain from your insights and innovative teaching strategies,” he expressed.
