Punjab State Human Rights Commission chairperson Justice Sant Parkash, spearheading a thorough examination of conditions at Sangrur District Jail, confronted the pressing issues like drug smuggling and unauthorized mobile phone usage within the jail premisesf.
Accompanied by Jail Superintendent Manjit Singh Tiwana, Sangrur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Charanpreet Singh Walia, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-District Legal Service Authority’s secretary PS Kaleka, and Sangrur Civil Surgeon Dr Kirpal Singh, Justice Sant Parkash embarked on a mission to ensure the well-being and rights of inmates. An in-depth interaction was held with inmates to address their grievances and educate them about legal entitlements.
The inspection encompassed a review of the jail kitchen, with Justice Sant Parkash personally evaluating the quality of meals, which were found to meet stringent standards. Additionally, a visit to the Jail Hospital revealed six current admissions, with inmates expressing satisfaction with medical care provided by the facility’s staff, supplemented by Dr Kirpal’s assurance of specialist availability as needed.
Confronting challenges head-on, Justice Sant Parkash tackled issues of drug smuggling and mobile phone contraband within the jail premises. The Superintendent reported that drug addicts often resort to concealing substances in private areas, prompting the implementation of measures such as scanner installations to combat smuggling activities.
Regarding mobile phone proliferation, the Superintendent assured ongoing efforts to curb unauthorized usage, including plans to bolster security through heightening the boundary wall.
The visit underscored the PSHRC’s unwavering commitment to safeguard jail inmates’ rights and fostering a rehabilitative environment within correctional facilities. This proactive approach also reflected collaborative efforts between the Commission, jail administration, and relevant authorities to address challenges and maintain the dignity of incarcerated individuals.
