Speaker adjourns Assembly session, Opposition MLAs marshalled out

Friday, 27 September 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

The two-day session of the Delhi Assembly started on a stormy note on Thursday as BJP and AAP leaders raised slogans against each other, forcing the speaker to briefly adjourn the proceedings even as many opposition MLAs were marshaled out.

Chaos erupted as soon as Speaker Ram Niwas Goel listed names of leaders who will raise issues in the House to which BJP leaders objected and demanded that their issues be raised as well. The BJP leaders wanted to raise issues such as tabling of reports of Comptroller and Auditor General and drainage and sewer system of the national Capital.

The LG Secretariat had written to Chief Secretary Dharmendra and Finance Secretary Ashish Chandra Verma, asking them to lay pending reports of the apex auditor CAG in the assembly during the session after bringing the matter to the chief minister's attention.

Both AAP and BJP leaders then started raising slogans, with some BJP MLAs coming to the well, against each other prompting the speaker to adjourn the proceedings for 15 minutes. They were marshaled out of the house even as the AAP claimed that these are there cheap tactics to not discuss the issue of termination of bus marshals.

However, the BJP MLAs returned and joined the discussion on the issue. “Even though we were insulted and thrown out of the assembly, we have come here so we can discuss the matter,” Leader of Opposition Vijendra Gupta said. The assembly also discuused the alleged illegal cutting of 1,100 trees where the AAP claimed that the Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kuamr Saxena did so without the permission of Supreme Court to protect farm houses.

The new government headed by Chief Minister Atishi is expected to seek a vote of trust in the House on Friday. Atishi has now been allotted the seat number one in the assembly, while his predecessor and former Chief Minister was allotted seat number 41 in the Delhi assembly, many paces away from the chief minister's chair.Kejriwal’s trusted lieutenant Manish Sisodia was given a spot next to him, who was chief minister for close to 10 years, at seat 40.

Goel also announced the resignations and disqualifications of four MLAs, including three from the ruling AAP.
