In a significant triumph on law enforcement, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) achieved a major breakthrough by successfully neutralising Vinod Upadhyay, a notorious figure in Gorakhpur’s criminal underworld, during a fierce encounter in Sultanpur on Thursday night.
Vinod Upadhyay, son of Ramkumar Upadhyay and originally from Mayabazar police station area in Maharajganj, Ayodhya, had a notorious criminal record, leading the Gorakhpur police to place a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on him.
He was wanted in multiple cases, including land-grabbing, murder and attempted murder, making him a significant threat to public safety.
The Uttar Pradesh Police had declared a reward of one lakh rupees on Vinod Kumar Upadhyay, who held a prominent position among the top 61 mafias in the state.
The encounter unfolded in the Kotwali Dehat area of Sultanpur, where the STF personnel engaged in a fierce gunfight with the notorious criminal.
Vinod Upadhyay sustained serious injuries from the police gunfire during the encounter and transported to the medical college hospital in Sultanpur for urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, marking the end of his criminal reign.
Vinod Upadhyay had 35 cases registered against him in various police stations across different districts. The charges ranged from land-grabbing to heinous offenses such as murder and attempted murder.
His name prominently featured among the notorious mafias operating in the state, making his neutralisation a significant victory in the relentless efforts to curb organised crime in Uttar Pradesh.
Director General (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar commended the diligent efforts of law enforcement agencies, including the STF, in pursuing legal proceedings against Vinod Upadhyay.
