The "Mother Ocean Day" was observed on May 10.
The special day was founded by marine conservationist and artist, Angelina Marino, in 2011 to raise awareness about the importance of our oceans and their role in sustaining life on earth.
It's a day to celebrate the wonders of the ocean and all that it provides us with – from food to recreation to essential resources.
The ocean is also home to myriads of life forms belonging to flora and fauna. Phytoplankton and algae form the bases of aquatic food webs. They are eaten by primary consumers like zooplankton, small fish, and crustaceans. Primary consumers are in turn eaten by fish, small sharks, corals, and baleen whales. Top ocean predators include large sharks, billfish, dolphins, toothed whales, and large seals. Humans consume aquatic life from every section of this food web.
The ocean can also be violent when there is nature's fury. Our ocean is in serious trouble because of heating, pollution, acidification, and oxygen loss that pose serious threats to the health of the ocean and to all living beings.
Historically, there are four oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic. However, most countries - including the United States - now recognize the Southern (Antarctic) as the fifth ocean. The Pacific Ocean is the deepest ocean on Earth.
