Mindfully Practising AUM, explains Shri Guru Rajan Ji

The shakti of space, wind, fire, water and earth, the pronunciation of 'AUM' is even more blissful.

'Aum' is an integral part of not only the Indians but the life of people around the globe. A popular explanation of AUM is  that, it is the sound of creation, of the Sun. But to help us understand it optimally, Shri Guru Rajan ji explains in his vivid manner.

The entire universe is AUM. Everything that was, is, or will be is, in truth AUM. All else that transcends time, space, and effect is also AUM.

A signifies the energy that manifests the created universe; U is the vibration that preserves the creation M denotes the destructive force that dissolves the manifested universe back into the Infinite Spirit.

Chanting Aum thrice serves a specific purpose. It invokes the blessings to the three universes physical, astral and causal.

Let us consider all the three letters of AUM separately.

In AUM - the ‘Aaaa’ signifies the waking state, the ‘Uuuu’ represents the dream state, and the ‘Mmmm’ denotes the state of deep sleep. The fourth syllable is silence, that represents Turiya, the transcendent state of the supreme, the pure consciousness that pervades the former 3 states of manas (mind). As per our Vedas, these are the 4 qualities of awareness.

As we chant ‘AUM’, energy is focused just below the navel while producing the initial sound 'Aaaa' as we think of Brahma - the creator. A mindful state shall help us experience the vibration of the mantra escalate upwards through the solar plexus to the throat's cavity where the ‘uuuu’ sound can be experienced as we think of Vishnu - the preserver. The sound  ‘mmmm’ can be felt from around and upwards the eyes where we associate with Shiva- the liberator. In Turiya, we experience an ecstatic state as our Sahasrara (crown) chakra is activated as we soak in the serenity of the absolute cosmic silence - the Brahman.

Chanting 'AUM' regularly is highly beneficial to the body, mind and spirit. It brings to an equilibrium the mind, the senses, the 5 elements, and the psycho-biological doshas, harnessing one about gyan (spiritual knowledge), buddhi (clear perception), and viveka (discernment).

Reciting Aum thrice serves a specific purpose. It invokes the blessings to the three universes physical, astral and causal.

The sound 'A' is the Awakened state - Vaishvanara is the consciousness effected during the waking state and the one who is mindful of this first stage of reality has achieves all heartfelt goals about success.

The Sound 'U' is Dreaming state - Taijasa is the consciousness experienced during the dreaming state, and it operates between the waking and sleeping states, reflecting certain fealtures of the other two. One who acquanits with this state stands distinguised as one is closer to the knowers of Brahman - the Absolute Reality.

The Sound 'M' is Deep Sleep state - Prajna is the consciousness effected during the deep sleep state, and the one who is mindful about this stage knows the cosmic truth and finds everything within oneself.

Silence that follows AUM is the True Self

Unutterable and non comprehendable by the senses or by the mind, this is a state of nondual (advaita) reality. This fourth state - Turiya, is the real self that experiences the expanse of the Universal Consciousness.
