Joint raid on illicit liquor ahead of Assembly election in State

Saturday, 07 September 2024 | PNS | DALTONGANJ

Jharkhand's Palamu police and Bihar's Tandwa police launched a joint raid against illicit liquor manufacturing across their bordering areas, 82 kms away from Daltonganj.

SP Palamu Reeshma Ramesan said, "The joint raid ahead of the coming assembly election here in Jharkhand is for the express purpose of reclaiming the interiors where illicit liquor is brewed."

A team of police officials led by Ameet Kumar of Bihar's Tandwa police station limits joined the counterpart in Harihurganj whose contingent was led by the officer in charge Chandan Kumar, conducted raids at Kulhaiya areas where the joint teams demolished the shanty structures of illicit liquor brewing.

The joint teams seized nearly 7 quintals of fermented Mahua, fruits of which are distilled to prepare desi wine. The fermented Mahua was in drums.

Chandan Kumar said "Around 7 quintals of fermented Mahua that we seized were destroyed on the spot."

He conceded no arrest could be made as the shanty structure was all empty of humans except the utensils and the  hearth where the Mahua is boiled, had a smouldering fire.

Police officer said "The smouldering fire in the hearth indicated the bootleggers were active but once they got a whiff of police raid made good their escape."

Police sources said the illicit liquor making remains in the knowledge of the mukhiya, panchayat samiti members, forest personnel, mining personnel but none of them ever bother to inform police about it.

This particular illicit liquor manufacturing shanty structure at Kulhaiyya was 10 kms away from the nearest police station Harihurganj.

It was surrounded by huge lush green shrubs, said the police officer Chandan Kumar.

Between Jharkhand's Harihurganj and Bihar's Aurangabad there is a mandatory no man's land barely meters away from the Harihurganj police station.

There is prohibition in Bihar. Hence illicit wine is surreptitiously shipped to Bihar from Harihurganj.

It is shipped by road only as there is no train route. Illicit wine is shipped by car, SUV, lorry, tanker, vegetable carrier, straw loaded  carrier etc.
