JMM's Joba Manjhi defeats Geeta Koda

Wednesday, 05 June 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

BJP candidate Geeta Koda was defeated by JMM candidate Joba Manjhi in the most interesting all women battle. Joba Manjhi won by 1,66,983 votes. Joba has got 5,15,989 votes, while Geeta Koda has got 3,49,006 votes.

Kolhan is considered the fort of the Koda couple. Madhu Koda has dominated here. Madhu Koda is a leader who became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand while being an independent MLA. This is a record. Then he formed his own party. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Madhu Koda won the Singhbhum Lok Sabha seat as an independent candidate. At the same time, his wife Geeta Koda became MLA from Jagannathpur seat. Before the 2019 elections, Geeta Koda and Madhu Koda joined the Congress. When Congress made her a candidate from Singhbhum seat, she won from here. Then Geeta Koda was the only Congress MP in Jharkhand. Just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, she joined BJP. BJP fielded her in the election but this time she could not win.

There are six assembly seats in Singhbhum Lok Sabha constituency - Chaibasa, Majhgaon, Saraikela, Manoharpur and Chakradharpur. Out of these six seats, five are occupied by JMM, while one seat Jagannathpur is occupied by Congress MLA. Here, BJP or its allies did not win any of the six assembly seats in the 2019 assembly elections. For the last two years, JMM was claiming the Singhbhum seat. JMM said that in the area where five out of six MLAs are ours, there is a natural claim on the Lok Sabha seat. After this claim of JMM, Congress was on the back foot, the result of which was that seeing her ticket being cut, Geeta Koda went to BJP.

After joining BJP, there was resentment among the tribals towards Geeta Koda. Once she was even attacked, from where she was able to escape after a lot of difficulty. The angry people said that when we had sent her to the Lok Sabha by voting against the BJP, then she should not have gone to the BJP. On one hand, there was resentment among the people towards Geeta Koda, while on the other hand, all the five MLAs of JMM had pushed for Joba Manjhi.
