Jharkhand to showcase Dumka Silk, Godda Tassar on R-Day in Delhi

Friday, 05 January 2024 | PNS | Ranchi

Like previous year tableaux of 16 states and union territories including Jharkhand have been selected in the national programme organized in Delhi on the occasion of Republic Day 2024. Jharkhand has also made complete preparations for the national program to be held on Republic Day. This year, a tableau related to the production of world class quality silk produced in Dumka will be displayed in the tableau of Jharkhand.

The Central Government had asked for the draft of tableaux from all the states and union territories. After various stages of the selection process, tableaux of only 16 states and union territories were selected for display in the national program organized in Delhi. The draft of Jharkhand's tableau was appreciated by the officials in the selection process. The tableaux of all the selected states are to be prepared in New Delhi by 19 January 2023 and their rehearsal with full costumes is also to be done on 23 January 2023.

Notably, in 2023 State’s tableau depicting the famous Baidyanath Dham temple in Deoghar was displayed at the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. The state has participated in Republic Day parade after seven years’ gap.

The tableau had a statue of Birsa Munda in the front. Adivasi art Sohrai was shown at the side panel, while traditional dance 'Paika' was presented along with the tableau.

Its tableau, which was inspired by ancient clay temples in Maluti in the Dumka area, won second place in 2015. The state displayed a tableau with a Dokra art theme in 2013. When it made its premiere at the R-Day parade in 2004, it featured Birsa Munda. In 2021, the state didn’t submit any proposals. Santhal Hul in 2022 was used as a model, but it was rejected.

Jharkhand has showcased its tableau during the R-Day parade only five times. In 2015, its tableau based on historic terracotta temples in Maluti in Dumka district bagged the second prize. In 2013, the state presented a Dokra art-themed tableau. It showcased Birsa Munda when it debuted at the R-Day parade in 2004. The state did not send any proposal in 2021. The suggestion based on Santhal Hul in 2022 was rejected.

According to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Defence, the selection process of tableaux is an elaborate and time-consuming affair. The ministry constitutes a committee of distinguished persons from various fields to help shortlist the best proposals. In view of time constraints, only a limited number of proposals will be shortlisted and this time, the Centre is focussing on giving an opportunity to those states, which have showcased their tableau least number of times in the last eight years.
