Jamshedpur West: Banna blames opponents for spreading religious frenzy

Thursday, 28 November 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

Former MLA of Jamshedpur West, Banna Gupta, held a press conference today following the announcement of election results. Reflecting on his loss, he pointed to a conspiracy by his opponents, who allegedly distorted a part of his speech to create a communal narrative. Gupta emphasized his commitment to unity and secularism, asserting that such tactics undermined the developmental work he had accomplished during his tenure.

Gupta began by acknowledging various perspectives on his defeat shared by supporters, journalists, and well-wishers. “Some believe my development work was not effectively communicated to the public. Others point to the opposition’s active social media campaigns, contrasting with ours. A particular incident stands out — my speech on communal harmony was maliciously edited and circulated,” he said.

In the controversial speech, Gupta had called for solidarity among Hindus and Muslims against extremism within their communities, highlighting India’s diversity and unity. However, he alleged that opponents selectively broadcasted portions of the speech to propagate a divisive narrative. “The people of Jamshedpur are educated and aware. I underestimated how this false propaganda could set a narrative,” Gupta remarked.

Gupta recounted his election campaign, centered on his developmental achievements. “While I was among the people showcasing the work done during my tenure, the opposition focused on spreading religious frenzy. They succeeded in setting a Hindu-Muslim narrative against me,” he stated.

Detailing his developmental initiatives, Gupta cited efforts to clean and beautify the Sonari Domukhani Sangam, construct natural filters to stop drain water pollution in the Swarnarekha River, and organize a grand Ganga Aarti-style ceremony. He also mentioned the construction of sheds, altars, and infrastructure at religious and community sites, underscoring his inclusive approach. “Despite this, if someone calls me anti-Hindu, let them. I have always respected all religions and worked for every individual without bias,” Gupta affirmed.

Gupta highlighted welfare schemes implemented during his tenure, including the Chief Minister State Old Age Pension Scheme and the Maiya Scheme, under which he facilitated applications and distributed certificates to thousands of women.

Conceding defeat, Gupta extended his congratulations to Saryu Rai, the newly elected MLA, but urged him to continue the developmental projects initiated during his term. “This election is not the last. In democracy, public representatives come and go. I request that no obstacles be created in the projects I started for the people of Jamshedpur West,” Gupta appealed.

With a mix of defiance and hope, Gupta reiterated his commitment to serving the people and building a progressive, inclusive community. "I am not a leader who plays the politics of division but one who respects every religion and prioritizes development," he concluded.
