Foreign speakers' lectures marked the concluding session followed by valedictory ceremony, the two-day international conference organized by the Civil Engineering Department of at BIT Sindri here on Tuesday. Dr. Dong Sheng Shu from Wuhan University of Technology, China, presented his speech on "Deformation Monitoring of Super High-Rise Buildings Using Multi-GNSS PPP Methods while Dr. Ru Kalatjari from Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, also shared her research and experiences with the students through an online platform.In another session, Dr. Arya Asadi Longarudi from the University of East London discussed "Biomimicry in Geomechanics."
In the Expert Lecture Series, the keynote speaker, Prof. Rajesh Kumar, Professor at IIT BHU, focused on the environmental impact through his research and experience. He emphasized that the combination of cement and clay in the right proportions can enhance construction quality and reduce environmental damage. He advocated for the increased use of environmentally friendly materials in the construction industry.Another expert, Er. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Technical Advisor at Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Limited, delivered a lecture on "Bridge Construction: History and Development." He explained that while the question "What is a bridge?" may seem simple, its answer is profound and fascinating. He traced the history of bridges back to ancient civilizations, noting that the first known bridge was constructed in Mesopotamia using wood and stone. Over time, stronger and more diverse materials such as metal and concrete were introduced, revolutionizing bridge construction. He also highlighted the significant contributions of Leonardo da Vinci in advancing bridge engineering.
Dr. Suresh Kumar, Professor at IIT BHU, elaborated on the use of recycled tire chips for developing sustainable transportation infrastructure on soft soils. He answered all questions from the audience with ease.
In the final session, Dr. Vidya Bhushan Majhi from IIT Madras provided an insightful explanation of rain-induced landslides, with a specific focus on the Nilgiri region. He offered valuable approaches to mitigate landslide damage, which can serve as a guide for policymakers, environmentalists, and engineers.The valedictory ceremony was graced by Er. Sanjay Kumar Singh as the chief guest. Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shukla, the conference chair and founder and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Engineering, praised the Civil Engineering Department and assured his continued support in elevating the department and institution.
