Issuing an advisory for health department officials and citizens, Commissioner of Health Tarun Rathi on Saturday called for heightened readiness at hospitals in view of the ongoing festival season and winter.
The advisory underlined the need to ensure the availability of oxygen, nebulisers, and ventilators at all health centres. Instructions have also been issued for the availability of medicines and facilities in General OPD, Medicine, Paediatrics, Respiratory Diseases, Cardiology, and Neurology OPD to provide immediate solutions to pollution-related health issues.
The Commissioner of Health has directed all officials to use the Samir App to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) in their respective areas. The health department officials further advised citizens with lower immunity to be especially careful and to avoid exposure to polluted air for extended periods.
Those vulnerable to respiratory issues during this period include children under the age of five, pregnant women, the elderly, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those working outdoors. The health department advised these individuals to remain vigilant and to use masks to avoid pollution, especially during the colder months when higher air density results in a proportionate rise in air pollution.
The department recommended that citizens avoid outdoor physical exercises such as running or jogging during times of high pollution, particularly in the early morning and late evening. In an attempt to curb indoor pollution, the top health officials said that it is advisable not to use wood, coal, cow dung cakes, or kerosene, and asked households to avoid dry brooms and to use damp cloths to mop the floor to prevent dust particles from becoming airborne.
The advisory emphasised the importance of a balanced diet, including fresh fruits and vegetables, to ensure adequate intake of antioxidants that are known to boost immunity. In case of symptoms related to pollution-induced health issues, such as difficulty in breathing, cough, eye irritation, or chest pressure, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately.
Meanwhile, the Samir App recorded the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city between 128 at Idgah Hills and 153 at TT Nagar on Saturday.
