There is a trend of extreme heat in Bhopal in the last days of March and this time weather conditions are similar. The day temperature has reached 40 degree celsius and its effect is now visible in Upper Lake as in the month of March the water level decreased by 1 feet, whereas in 5 months (from November to March) the water level decreased by more than 5 feet.

The level of Upper Lake, the lifeline of the city, is 1666.80 feet. The big pond was completely filled with rain. Due to this, the gates of Bhadbhada Dam had to be opened. As of March 28, there is 1661.50 feet of water in Bada Talab. That means, 5.3 feet of water was reduced in 5 months. The maximum water level has decreased in March. Till the first week the level was 1661.50 feet. That means, the water has reduced by more than 1 feet in March itself.

Currently the day temperature in Bhopal is more than 40 degree celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, the mercury will reach 43 degrees in April and more than this in May. In such a situation the water level will decrease further. Water will evaporate due to strong sunlight.

Every day, water is supplied from Upper Lake to more than 3 lakh population of the old city and surrounding areas including Bairagarh (Sant Hirdaram Nagar). Water reaches more than 20 percent of the area, 25 MGD (million gallons of water per day) is supplied every day from Bada Talab.

Municipal Corporation's Assistant Engineer Water Works Ajay Solanki said that due to the heat the water in Bada Pond is definitely decreasing, but this will not affect the supply. There is enough water in the big pond. Adequate supply of water is being provided to the people.
