IMD issues orange alert for North West Jharkhand

Incessant showers that started on Saturday and persisted through Sunday and Monday are likely to continue today as well.

As per the Meteorological Centre, Ranchi, the deep depression over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jhakrhand moved west- northwestwards and lay centred about 10 kms south of Purulia in West Bengal, 70 kms west- southwest of Bankura, West Bengal, 50 kms north- northeast of Jamshedpur and 110 km east of Ranchi as of on Monday morning.

For September 17, an orange alert stating heavy to very heavy rain has been issued for the north western parts of the State while some places may also witness heavy showers. An alert for gusty winds with a speed of 40- 50 km per hour and ranging to 60 km per hour has also been issued for the western parts and adjoining areas.

“It is very likely to move west- northwestwards over Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand weaken into a depression. Thereafter, it would continue to move west- northwestwards over Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh during the next 24 hours. On September 17, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Palamu and Garhwa while heavy rain is predicted for Latehar and Chatra districts. The rest of the State including parts of western and central Jharkhand will receive moderate rain,” said Director MET Centre, Ranchi Abhishek Anand.

From June 1 to September 16, the State has received a total of 867.8 mm of rainfall as against the required amount of 927.9 mm.

Owing to the recent monsoon, the rainfall deficit across the State has plummeted to -6 percent, the rainfall recorded in Jharkhand this monsoon is in the normal range of +19% to -19%. However, it is still below the exact normal required.

The State capital has witnessed 1034.7 mm of rainfall while the required amount is considered to be 944.8 mm. Rainfall in Ranchi has been observed in the normal range at 10 percent.

The maximum rainfall in Jharkhand has been recorded in Dhanbad at 29 percent. Rainfall realised here is 1242.1 mm as against the required amount of 961.6 mm

As per the data shared by the Meteorological Centre, Ranchi, on Monday, in the last 24 hours, the State capital has received a total of 32.8 mm of rainfall while 30.2 mm of rain was recorded in Jamshedpur and the maximum amount of rainfall has been observed in Giridih at 70.5 mm.
