Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the Winter Carnival Shimla at The Ridge on Tuesday and said that such carnivals and festivals depict the rich culture and traditions of the State.
Sukhu said that it was the present State Government who started Winter Carnivals at Shimla and Dharamshala for the first time. He said that the Winter Carnival Manali was also being organized on a large scale by the Government, adding that the State Government was making earnest efforts to harness the tourism potential of the State so that more and more tourists are attracted towards the State thereby it could become a most favoured tourist destination.
He said that the Government has issued a notification regarding opening of restaurants and other eatable shops round-the-clock from 23rd December 2024 to 5th January, 2025 so that tourists and visitors do not face any inconvenience during their stays in the State, adding that the State Government would provide all logistic assistance to the tourists. He urged the visitors to enjoy the carnival and snowfall and also made a fervent appeal to all to keep the State polythene free by using dustbins.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that hilly areas of the State including Shimla city would get another spell of snowfall during Christmas and New Year which will be an added attraction for the tourists. He said that he was optimistic that there will be good snowfall during this winter season which goes a long way in recharging our water sources.
Sukhu also participated in Mahanati and flagged off a cultural parade on the occasion in which participants from 11 districts took part.
SNOWFALL LEADS TO CLOSURE OF OVER 170 ROADS
Over 170 roads, including three national highways, were closed in Himachal Pradesh following snowfall in several districts, officials said on Tuesday. Many of these roads, however, were made operational for traffic after removing snow. Snowfall was recorded in the Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti and the higher reaches of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba and Sirmaur districts. A maximum 89 roads were closed in Shimla, followed by 44 in Kinnaur and 25 in Mandi. Some areas were without electricity after 683 transformers stopped working, the State Emergency Operation Centre said.
Officials have advised the tourists to adhere to the advisories issued by the district administration and the police, listen to suggestions from locals and refrain from driving in the snow. Khadrala received 24 cm of snow, followed by Sangla (16.5 cm), Shillaro (15.3 cm), Chopal and Jubbal (15 cm each), Kalpa (13.7 cm), Nichar (10 cm), Shimla (7 cm), Pooh (6 cm) and Jot (5 cm). Snowfall was also witnessed in the suburbs of Manali and Dalhousie since Monday while a few places in the mid and lower hills received light rain.
