ESL Steel Limited, a leading integrated steel producer and a Vedanta Group company based in Bokaro, has consistently dedicated itself to societal and community welfare.

In response to the urgent need to address environmental degradation, the Health, Safety, Environment & Sustainability (HSES) department of ESL Steel Limited organized a Plantation Drive on World Environment Day, declared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This event marked the culmination of a week-long Environmental Consciousness, Awareness & Action Week celebrated within the plant.

World Environment Day, held annually on June 5th since 1973, is the largest global platform for environmental outreach. Led by UNEP, it engages millions worldwide in efforts to protect the planet, emphasizing leadership, partnerships, and informed actions to improve quality of life without compromising future generations. This year's theme focuses on Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.

ESL Steel’s Environmental Consciousness, Awareness & Action Week, which began on May 23rd, involved extensive activities that engaged nearly all employees. Organized by the HSES department, the week featured awareness sessions, departmental quizzes, poster-making competitions, online quizzes, and photography and videography contests. The highlight was the ambitious Plantation Drive aimed at planting 150,000 saplings.

During the celebration, Ravish Sharma, Chief Operating Officer at ESL Steel Limited, emphasized the collective responsibility to protect the environment. "The environment affects us all, and we must all take care of Mother Nature. The 'One-point-five' declaration from the 2015 Paris Agreement mandates that we strive to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100," he remarked.

Senior leaders, including Tapesh Chandra Naskar, Director of DIP;  Amrit Mukherjee, Director of Central Engineering;  Saroj Kumar Singh, Director of Steel; and Amal Ghosh, Director of Projects, gathered to felicitate the winners of various competitions and encourage continued participation in environmental efforts throughout the year.

This initiative underscores ESL Steel Limited’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive approach to fostering a greener, more resilient future.
