A 36-year-old man was charred to death in a car after it caught fire following a collision with an SUV on a flyover in Dwarka Sector 21 in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Arvind Kumar, who is a resident of Faruk Nagar in Haryana's Gurugram district. Ankit Singh, deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) said that on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, at about 12.15 am, information about the accident and burning of two vehicles on the Dwarka Expressway was received in Sector 23 Dwarka police station.
"Based on this information, the police reached the Yashobhoomi flyover and found Hyundai Creta car and Maruti Suzuki Eeco van in accidental and burning conditions. The fire brigade as requisitioned reached there," he added.
A Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said that a call regarding the fire was received at 12.20 am, and two fire tenders were dispatched to the scene. "By the time the fire tenders arrived, both vehicles were fully engulfed in fire," the official said, adding that it is suspected that the two vehicles collided head-on.
"The occupants of the Creta managed to get out in time, but the person inside the Eeco was trapped. His charred body was recovered from the car after the fire was extinguished," the officer added. The death of the victim happened due to the accident and fire, he said.
A crime team inspected the scene, and the body was taken to the Safdarjung Hospital mortuary.
An FIR under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106A (causing death by negligence) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered, and efforts are underway to identify the victim. "Further investigation is underway," police officials stated.
