Chrysanthemum show begins at Terraced Garden in Chandigarh
Chandigarh: The three-day flower show began at Terraced Garden, Sector 33 in Chandigarh on Friday with Mayor Kuldeep Kumar inaugurating it in the presence of Amit Kumar, Commissioner, MCC. According to officials, the Municipal Corporation made it a ‘Zero Waste’ event, besides showcasing various stalls of different initiatives and projects of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh and Self Help Groups registered under DAY-NULM will be concluded on December 15. The Mayor and Commissioner took a round of all the stalls including Swachh Bharat Mission where awareness is being created towards segregation of waste in four types of waste separately from the source, compost of Horticulture waste, Home Composting, Safai Mitra, construction and demolition waste material, Fire & Rescue Services, jute bags, candle making, painting by Self Help Groups, ‘Naya Sa’, initiative of MCC to reuse the old cloths by selling them to the people on nominal charges after proper cleaning and ironing etc. In addition to that the MCC also showcased its unique initiative of making sticks and other items from floral waste under the banner of ‘Arpan’ run by a self help group aided by Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.
MCC officers voluntarily give up their entertainment allowance due to financial crunch
Chandigarh: Following the footsteps of the Commissioner, all officers of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh having the requisite entitlement, on Friday volunteered to give up their entertainment allowance by 50 percent, which will save expenditure amounting to Rs. 8 lacs per annum. Nearly 28 officers of MCC, including Joint Commissioners, Chief Engineer, SEs, all Executive Engineers and other administrative officers gave up their entertainment allowance. Earlier, the MCC Commissioner Amit Kumar had volunteered to gave up his entertainment allowance to the tune of 50 percent, which costs 90 K per annum. "The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh is facing huge financial crises these days and the Commissioner has directed all his officers to curtail expenditure and explore maximum revenue generation solutions in the Corporation," a statement said. The Commissioner also slashed the expenditure of Chrysanthemum Show to Rs. 3.50 lacs from approved budget of Rs 24 lacs. The MCC auctioned food court in the three days Chrysanthemum show for Rs. 3.35 lacs therefore meeting out all expenditure incurred.
Water of Ghaggar river unfit for drinking or irrigation: MP Selja
Chandigarh: Sirsa MP Kumari Selja on Friday said that the water of the Ghaggar River is neither fit for drinking nor for irrigation. In a statement, she said that in Haryana, the total dissolved solids (TDS) range from 198-1068 mg/l, and in Punjab, it is between 248-2010 mg/l. Despite claims by both states regarding sewage treatment capacities, the reality reflects otherwise. Selja raised questions in Parliament to the Union Minister for Jal Shakti about the condition of the Ghaggar River. According to her, the Union Minister confirmed that the water is unfit for drinking and irrigation.
Conserve energy for a safer future, says Kapurthala legislator
Kapurthala: Congress MLA from Kapurthala, Rana Gurjeet Singh on Friday called upon the people of Punjab to take pledge to conserve energy in the form of electrical power for a brighter and progressive future for the upcoming generations. On the eve of national energy conservation day (falling on December 14), he said electricity is a national asset and saving it is like performing fundamental duty as contributing towards the economic development of the nation. “So it becomes a moral duty of all citizens of the nation to save electricity and contribute towards the nation’s development,” he reiterated. Sharing that each unit saved is 1.25 units generated, he said people should make energy consumption more ethical by making conscious choices. He said that lowering energy consumption will have a positive impact not only on the individual finances but will also help in nation-building.
