BJP MP Brijendra Singh joins Congress

Monday, 11 March 2024 | PNS | Chandigarh

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Brijendra Singh, MP from Hisar Lok Sabha constituency, on Sunday resigned from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Congress at party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi.

Singh said that he has decided to quit the BJP following disagreements on issues such as those of farmers, the Agniveer program, and of the country’s women wrestlers. A few minutes after his announcement on X, Brijendra reached the residence of Kharge to join the grand old party.

Brijendra, the son of former Union Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh, joined Congress party nearly five months after Birender gave an ultimatum to the BJP at a rally in Jind in October 2023. Birender had then said that he would leave the BJP if it continued an alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) of Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala in Haryana.

Sources in the Congress said that Brijendra is likely to get a ticket from the party from Hisar Lok Sabha constituency in the upcoming general election. Brijendra is a former bureaucrat of the Indian Administrative Service. He had voluntarily resigned in 2019 and won the Lok Sabha poll from Hisar on a BJP ticket with a little over 51 per cent of the vote share. His closest contestant was Dushyant Chautala, who is now Haryana’s Deputy CM.

Brijendra Singh’s father, Birender Singh, who was Rajya Sabha MP from Haryana between 2016 and 2020, may also join the Congress party later. Brijendra Singh is the great-grandson of prominent Jat leader Sir Chhotu Ram. His mother, Prem Lata, was also a BJP MLA in Haryana.

Hooda addresses Jan Aakrosh rally in Faridabad

Faridabad: Haryana’s former Chief Minister and the Leader of Opposition in Vidhan Sabha Bhupinder Singh Hooda, addressing the Jan Aakrosh rally at Old Faridabad on Sunday, said that the time has come to get rid of the BJP-JJP government with the power of votes.

Referring to the broken-down law and order situation in the state, he said that there is no need to tell anyone anything about Haryana. People themselves are victims and are facing problems.

Hooda said that two lakh government posts are lying vacant in the State, and challenged the government to tell if it has done any one work in Faridabad in the last 10 years. “Thousands of small and big factories have been closed here. There are no teachers in schools, no doctors in hospitals and no employees in offices,” he pointed out.

Kejriwal urges people to vote for his party candidate Sushil Gupta from Kurukshetra

Kurukshetra: Addressing a public meeting in Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency, AAP supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday urged the people to vote for his party candidate Sushil Gupta from the Kurukshetra seat in the upcoming elections.

“I came from Delhi to seek your votes with folded hands. Sushil Gupta ji is going door to door to seek your votes. We need your votes to win elections. BJP do not need your votes,” said Kejriwal.

He further said that the AAP and the Congress will fight the Lok Sabha polls in alliance in Haryana. Under the tie-up, the AAP will contest from the lone Kurukshetra seat out of total 10 parliamentary seats in the state.

Invoking the Mahabharata, Kejriwal said that Kurukshetra is a pious land where the ‘dharmayudh’ was fought. Referring to the BJP-led Centre, Kejriwal said, “They have everything. They have all the powers. They have IB, CBI, ED.”

“We have our ‘dharma’ (righteousness) with us. It is a fight of ‘dharma’ and ‘adharma’ (non-righteousness) and you have to decide whether you are with ‘dharma’ or ‘adharma’,” he added.
