BJP formulates election strategy in Punjab as Lok Sabha polls near

Thursday, 04 January 2024 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

As the specter of Lok Sabha elections looms, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has kickstarted its strategic maneuvers in Punjab. Senior party leaders put their heads together on Wednesday in Chandigarh to take the pulse of the state's political landscape.

Meetings with state BJP office bearers, district unit heads, in-charges of different wings, amng others were held during which, the party engaged in a comprehensive analysis, drawing insights from the contrasting outcomes in the recent assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The saffron party has been closely monitoring the political dynamics in Punjab since the Shiromani Akali Dal severed ties with the BJP over the agricultural laws. Although the Central Government has repealed the contentious laws, occasional headlines hint at discussions about the SAD rejoining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

At the same time, in an apparent attempt to consolidate its position, the BJP is also emphasizing the need for awareness among the voters about various schemes and programs run by the Central Government, especially concerning the Sikh community and the Punjabis.

As the political landscape in Punjab undergoes constant evolution, the BJP is actively shaping its strategy and outreach efforts, aiming to secure a robust position in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The state party affairs’ in-charge Vijay Rupani was in Chandigarh to hold discussions with the state leaders and have a ground reality check of the prevailing state of affairs in Punjab.

With all the political parties in the state already in full swing, navigating alliance dynamics and fortifying their networks, speculations about the alliance between the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal have been gaining traction. Vijay Rupani, Gujarat’s former Chief Minister of Gujarat, also added fuel to these speculations with his recent statement indicating that alliances with Akali Dal are conceivable, and anything could unfold.

However, at the same time, Rupani made it clear that the decision to form an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal rests with the top leadership. In fact, not wasting any moment, he declared that the BJP is gearing up to contest all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab.

Rupani's remarks underscore the BJP's preparedness for a solo contest in the Lok Sabha elections, highlighting their determination to contest on all 13 seats in Punjab. The party is leveraging its national achievements, such as the successful space mission and key policy decisions, to strengthen its campaign.

The alliance, if materialized, could reshape the political equation in Punjab, presenting a united front against rival parties. “While alliances can bring strength through combined voter bases and shared resources, the intricacies of negotiations and power-sharing agreements demand astute political maneuvering which is crucial,” said a senior BJP leader.

Notably, the state BJP unit is set to hold a series of meetings for the three days to deliberate on the Punjab scenario for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Take Centre’s Achievements to Every Doorstep: Jakhar to party cadre
In a rallying call to the state BJP leaders and cadre, Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar outlined a vision to propel the party's achievements under the BJP-led Central Government to every citizen's doorstep. Addressing the state BJP in-charges and morcha heads, Jakhar set a formidable goal of securing 400 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, up from the current 303.

Lauding BJP's success in states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, Jakhar called upon the party cadre to reach out to every citizen in every village and city, countering what he termed as the divisive politics of the Congress.

Reflecting on a crucial meeting held in Delhi last month, where top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister, BJP national president JP Nadda, discussed strategies for the 2024 polls, Jakhar emphasized that the BJP had earned the right to seek votes across India by fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of every Indian.

Calling for an extensive outreach, Jakhar urged the party members to ensure optimal publicity and awareness, especially among the needy, regarding various Central Government schemes. He emphasized the importance of translating these initiatives into tangible benefits for the people and not letting them remain confined to paperwork.

The ongoing Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra, Jakhar stressed, presented a golden opportunity to spread awareness about transformative schemes, including Vishwakarma Scheme, Aayushman, Kissan Samman Nidhi, and Ujjwala Scheme.
