In a state-wide event aimed at strengthening the bond between parents, teachers, and students, Punjab witnessed a massive turnout as over 20,000 government schools held Mega Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTM) on Tuesday. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, along with other Cabinet Ministers and legislators, personally visited schools across the State to interact with parents and students. The initiative, a part of the state's educational reforms, aimed at involving the parents more actively in their children's academic journey and to foster a supportive environment for students.
At a School of Eminence in Nangal, Mann met with parents and students, where he urged them not to pressurize their children academically. He stressed the importance of allowing children to explore their individual talents and encouraged parents to trust and appreciate their children’s unique abilities. “Each child has a special talent given by God. Some may excel in writing, while others are great in sports. We must stop comparing them with others and appreciate their individuality,” said Mann.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the immense pressure of expectations can sometimes negatively impact children. Drawing on an example from Elon Musk’s company, Mann inspired the students to become masters of their chosen fields so that they have no competition. His words aimed to boost the students’ confidence and encourage them to pursue their passions without undue stress.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to improve the state’s education sector, Mann revealed that more than 10,000 students, including 7,200 girls, are now benefiting from the newly-introduced bus service in government schools. “Our government is working hard to ensure that teachers focus solely on teaching. Administrative and other non-teaching tasks are being allocated to support staff, ensuring that educators can devote their time and energy to students,” Mann said, emphasizing the government's dedication to enhancing the learning environment.
During the PTM, parents were given the opportunity to discuss their children’s academic progress and areas for improvement. Teachers conversed with parents in their local languages, ensuring clear communication. The Education Department also sought feedback from parents about the facilities provided in schools and discussed potential improvements.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains and MP Malwinder Singh Kang, who were present at the event, reiterated the government's commitment to educational excellence. Bains emphasized that the government is focused on nurturing young talent and providing them with the resources they need to succeed.
Mann also shared details of the government’s ongoing efforts to revolutionize the education system in Punjab. He mentioned that the state has sent batches of teachers and education officers to countries like Singapore and Finland, as well as to premier institutes like IIM Ahmedabad, for training in modern educational techniques. The objective, Mann said, is to ensure that students in Punjab receive world-class education, enabling them to excel in their fields.
In addition, the Chief Minister highlighted that 118 government schools have been transformed into Schools of Eminence, with a focus on high-speed internet and modern infrastructure. Uniforms have been distributed, and a transport facility has been initiated for these schools. The Punjab government has also regularized over 12,000 employees in the School Education Department and recruited more than 10,000 teachers since April 2022.
Mann urged the parents to have faith in their children's capabilities and to allow them to pursue the career paths they are passionate about. “We must encourage our children to explore their own interests and trust that they will excel when given the right support,” he said, adding that the government’s top priorities are education, health, power, water, and infrastructure.
