The AIIMS Bhopal has once again demonstrated its excellence in medical research, innovation and patient care. Recently, the institute achieved a historic milestone in the treatment of pediatric blood cancer by successfully performing a Haploidentical bone marrow transplant on a seven-year-old girl who was suffering from relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (childhood blood cancer).
This complex procedure was carried out a month ago under the leadership of Dr. Gaurav Dhingra and Dr. Sachin Bansal from the Department of Medical Oncology and Hematology. The child had been receiving treatment under the supervision of Dr. Narendra Choudhary in the Pediatric Oncology Department at AIIMS Bhopal. The patient's brother was selected as the donor, as he was a half-HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) match with her.
The patient received a myelo-ablative conditioning regimen with total body irradiation, which was successfully administered by Dr. Saikat Das, Dr. Vipin Kharade, and Physicist (RSO) Avaneesh Mishra from the Radiation Oncology Department. This procedure is a significant achievement for AIIMS Bhopal, as it has become the second AIIMS after AIIMS Delhi to provide such advanced bone marrow transplant services for blood cancer in children.
AIIMS Bhopal ED Prof Ajai Singh appreciated this achievement, saying, "This success is a testament to AIIMS Bhopal's dedication and advanced medical services. Successfully completing complex procedures like the Haplo-identical bone marrow transplant demonstrates the expertise and commitment of our institution's team. With this achievement, AIIMS Bhopal has set a new direction in the treatment of pediatric blood cancer." Prof. Singh wished the patient a speedy recovery and recommended regular follow-ups.
