AIIMS Bhopal organises street play to create awareness on organ donation

In a significant effort to promote the noble cause of organ donation, the Department of Anesthesia at AIIMS Bhopal organized a street play on Saturday. This event was part of the Organ Donation Day celebrations aimed at raising awareness about the critical need for organ donation in India.

The street play, performed by a dedicated group of MBBS students, nursing staff, and doctors, effectively conveyed the life-saving message of organ donation to the public. The performance highlighted the alarming disparity between the demand and supply of kidney transplants in India. Every year, approximately 7.5 lakh kidney transplants are required, but only 11 thousand kidneys are available through organ donation. This stark contrast underscores the urgent need to increase public awareness and participation in organ donation.

Prof. (Dr) Ajai Singh emphasized the profound impact of organ donation, stating, "Organ donation not only gives life to an individual but also to an entire family. By organizing such events, AIIMS Bhopal is committed to running an effective program to promote organ transplantation in the country and the state. Through organ donation, a person's organ can continue to live and give new life to another even after death."

The play underscored the importance of organ donation as a permanent solution to the increasing cases of dialysis in India. While dialysis serves to purify the blood, it is not a long-term solution. Kidney transplants, made possible through organ donation, provide a permanent solution and significantly improve the quality of life for patients.

AIIMS Bhopal, through its dedicated efforts and initiatives, continues to play a pivotal role in promoting organ donation and transplantation. The institution is committed to educating the public, dispelling myths, and encouraging more individuals to come forward and pledge their organs.
