In a significant statement marking a milestone in the fight against Naxalism, Jharkhand's newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Gupta announced that 95% of the Naxal issue in the state has been resolved. However, he acknowledged that the remaining 5% is concentrated in the Chaibasa district, where intensified operations are underway to eradicate the menace completely.
DGP Gupta was addressing the media after an in-depth review meeting with senior police officials in Chaibasa on Sunday. The meeting, held at the police office auditorium, saw the participation of officers from the Jharkhand Police Headquarters, including the Chaibasa Superintendent of Police (SP) and Deputy Inspector General (DIG). Discussions focused on ongoing anti-Naxal campaigns, the state’s surrender policy, and strategies for strengthening policing in affected regions.
The DGP’s visit to Chaibasa underscores the state’s commitment to addressing the lingering Naxal challenge in its most affected district. During the meeting, Gupta highlighted the importance of continued vigilance and coordination among security forces. He emphasized that the operations against Naxalites must remain uncompromising, with a focus on flushing out remaining insurgents.
In his directives, Gupta announced a policy of rotation for police personnel stationed in Naxal-affected areas for extended periods, aiming to boost operational efficiency and morale. Additionally, the DGP reviewed the progress of various initiatives launched post-formation of the state’s new government, which has prioritized eliminating Naxalism.
DGP Gupta’s tenure has seen several critical successes, including recent encounters and strategic actions. Among the highlights was the killing of Lambu, a prominent PLFI Maoist area commander, in an encounter near Tebo police station in Chaibasa. Describing this as a significant victory, Gupta reiterated the resolve of the police force to dismantle the remnants of Naxal strongholds.
According to a report by the Special Branch of the Police Headquarters, 66 Naxalites and extremists remain absconding in the state. The DGP assured that targeted operations and enhanced intelligence-sharing mechanisms are being implemented to apprehend them. He also expressed confidence that Jharkhand is on the verge of becoming a Naxal-free state.
Since assuming office, Anurag Gupta has taken proactive measures to streamline the policing system and intensify anti-Naxal operations. On December 6, he conducted a statewide review of law and order, issuing stringent directives to concerned officials. His visit to Chaibasa marks another step in his hands-on approach to resolving longstanding security challenges.
The gradual resolution of the Naxal issue has significant implications for Jharkhand’s development. Chaibasa and its surrounding areas have long grappled with Naxalite influence, which has hindered infrastructure projects and economic progress. The ongoing operations aim to restore normalcy, boost investor confidence, and enable uninterrupted development activities in the region.
While acknowledging the achievements, the DGP also underscored the need for vigilance, as isolated pockets of insurgents remain active. “Our efforts are focused on ensuring that the gains made so far are irreversible,” he said. The police force, in collaboration with central agencies, is determined to maintain the momentum.
DGP Anurag Gupta’s visit to Chaibasa and his unequivocal declaration about the near-resolution of the Naxal problem signal a turning point in Jharkhand’s battle against insurgency. With robust operational strategies and unwavering commitment, the state is inching closer to a peaceful and prosperous future.
