Maldives former President condemns

Monday, 08 January 2024 | PNS | New Delhi

n Former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed slammed the Maldives Government official Mariyam Shiuna for her derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his visit to Lakshadweep.

Nasheed termed the remarks as “appalling.”

Condemning Shinua’s remarks, Nasheed asked President Mohamed Muizzu to tell the world that the comments by the Ministers “do not reflect Government policy”.

“What appalling language by Maldives Government official Mariyam towards the leader of a key ally, that is instrumental for Maldives’ security and prosperity.

“The Mohamed Muizzu Government must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect Gov policy,” Nasheed said in a post on X.

He was elected President in 2008, but resigned in 2012 after what he called a coup engineered by his rivals.

The Minister’s social media posts about Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep Islands, India’s smallest Union Territory, aimed at promoting tourism on the island, triggered an uproar in India.
