26 arrested, Bahraich tense, but under control

In a significant development, Uttar Pradesh police have arrested 26 individuals in connection with the recent violence in Bahraich. The arrests were made earlier today, and the accused were sent to jail following medical examinations, according to SP’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Shivesh Shukla.

To prevent the spread of misinformation, internet services in the district have been suspended until October 16. Normalcy is returning in the area as shops in the affected area opened on Tuesday afternoon. “The situation in Bahraich remains tense but under control”, District Magistrate Monika Rani said.

The violence in Bahraich saw over 50 houses being vandalised, and their residents fled. To maintain law and order, police patrolling has been intensified across a 20-kilometre radius in Hardi and Mahsi areas.

Security measures include the deployment of police vehicles for continuous surveillance and strict entry protocols, allowing access to the affected areas only after verifying identification through Aadhaar cards. Amid the ongoing tension, the family of Ram Gopal, who was killed during the violence, met with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the CM House. Ram Gopal’s father, visibly distressed, pleaded for justice with folded hands before the CM.

Mahsi MLA Sureshvar Singh accompanied the grieving family during the meeting. The CM assured them of a relief package, which includes financial assistance of Rs10 lakh, a PM house, an Ayushman Bharat health card, and a contractual job for Ram Gopal’s widow.

The situation in the violence-stricken areas remains tense, with the Rapid Action Force (RAF), Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and local police deployed to maintain order. District Magistrate Monika Rani stated that the administration is assessing the extent of the damage to the vandalised houses.

Additional director general (ADG), law and order (L&O) Amitabh Yash, along with other senior police officials, is currently stationed in Bahraich, closely monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticised the Samajwadi Party (SP) over the violence, accusing the SP and Congress of orchestrating the unrest. Singh questioned, “What will Akhilesh ji say now? The country was divided on religious grounds-Hindu and Muslim. Are we to face bullets in our own country for taking out processions or immersing idols? Why do such incidents happen in our own country?” He alleged that the Bahraich violence was a conspiracy by the SP and Congress, claiming that Akhilesh Yadav remains silent when such incidents occur.
