In an achievement of sorts, a team of seven mountaineers from Pune hoisted the Indian tri-colour on Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, on the 78the Indian Independence Day on Thursday.
Reports reaching here on Friday said that the mountaineers belonging to the Pune-based Giripremi Adventure Foundation (GAF) reached Mt. Kilimanjaro after 11 hours’ climb. The nine mountaineers hoisted Indian flag at 10:35 am and sang the national anthem.
Located in Tanzania, near the Kenya border, Mount Kilimanjaro stands tall at 19,341 feet (5,895 meters) and is one of the Seven Summits, the highest peaks in each of the seven continents.
The team members, who hoisted the Indian tricolour at the Mt. Kilimanjaro were GAF's mountaineer Ankit Sohoni, members Shashikant Hiremath, Subhash Pawar, Mangesh Gokhale, Aniruddh Deshpande, Vaibhav Deshmukh, and Anjali Hazari.
