Following a mysterious blast outside an Army camp late Tuesday night in the Surankote area of Poonch, the entire security grid was alerted and massive searches were launched during the day to track down the footprints of terrorists hiding in the area. Random searches of vehicles were carried out at security checkposts set up along the Surankote Potha bypass road.
According to ground reports, a loud bang was heard late Tuesday night near the periphery wall of the Army camp in the main Surankote town. No one received injuries due to the blast.
The sentry manning the security post located atop the 20-foot high boundary wall was the first respondent who raised an alarm soon after the mysterious blast occurred.
In response, the security forces conducted thorough searches in the area to gather vital clues about the nature of the blast.
The police and army authorities in Poonch remained tight-lipped over the nature of the blast during the day.
When this correspondent contacted a sub-divisional police officer in Surankote he too feigned ignorance about the nature of the blast. "I cannot comment on the nature of the blast. Investigations were still on", the police officer quipped before disconnecting the phone call.
However, some of the media reports claimed terrorists lobbed grenades targeting the army post on the rear portion of the army camp. Unconfirmed reports also claimed the terrorists could have triggered an Improvised Explosive Device to create a big impact and inflict maximum casualties.
The twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch earlier witnessed several attacks by Pakistani terrorists on army vehicles in which several soldiers sacrificed their lives.
