The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is organising the inaugural Swachhata Cricket Premier League, will feature 12 teams, each representing a different zone of the civic body, set to take place in the Najafgarh zone from September 16 to September 30, 2024.
According to a statement by the civic body, this league is a key initiative under the Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign, aimed at recognizing and celebrating the relentless efforts of the Swachhata Sainiks who work tirelessly to keep our city clean.
“All matches of the Swachhata Cricket Premier League will be held at the Harikishan Cricket Ground, located in Ward 126, Khaira Gaon. Uniquely, the league is for Swacchta Sainiks, recognising the hardworking sanitation workers who contribute significantly to our community’s cleanliness and hygiene,” a senior MCD official said.
The statement added that the league will be played in a league-cum-knockout format, with participating teams divided into four groups. Each match will consist of 10 overs, with the exception of the semi-final and final matches, which will be extended to 20 overs for a more competitive and thrilling finish.
“This cricket league serves as a platform not only to showcase the athletic skills of our Swachhata Sainiks but also to honour their unwavering commitment to the cleanliness and well-being of the city. It is a testament to the MCD's appreciation of their contributions and an effort to bring their vital work into the spotlight,” it said.
“From the Central Zone, we have the Central Knight Riders, while the City S.P. Zone will be represented by the City S.P. Strikers. The Civil Lines Zone team is named the Civil Lines Marvels, and the Karol Bagh Zone will field the Karol Bagh Maharajas. Keshavpuram Kings will represent the Keshavpuram Zone, and Najafgarh Zone will be cheered on by the Najafgarh Stallion,” it added.
Further, the statement said that the Narela Zone team is Narela United, and the Rohini Zone brings the Rohini Royals to the competition. “From the South Zone, we have the South Stars, while Shahadara North Zone and Shahadara South Zone will be represented by Shahadara North Falcons and Shahadara South Blasters, respectively. The West Zone will be pitching in its team, namely, West Titans,” it stated.
