Suresh Gopi, the film actor-turned-MP-turned-union Minister of state- in the Narendra Modi-led Government at the Centre has become a major embarrassment to the BJP leadership.

According to top leaders in Kerala BJP, Suresh Gopi has lost his mental balance as the union Minister does not know what to tell or what not to tell. "We do not have any issues with George Kurian, the other Minister from Kerala because he behaves in a dignified manner and uses words with caution and care," said a BJP leader from Kerala who is respected by the party's high command.

While attending a function held under the auspices of Kerala Film Chamber at Kochi the other day, Minister Suresh Gopi said he was not happy in remaining a union minister as cinema was his first love. "I have some 20 or 22 movies lined up for me and would like to focus on my profession as a film star. Though I met union Minister Amit Shah the other day and told him about the predicament, he threw away the files handed over by me and asked me to continue as a Minister," said Gopi while addressing the Film Chamber meeting.

Suresh Gopi is the first Lok Sabha member of BJP to get elected from Kerala. He contested from Thrissur constituency which was a Congress stronghold and won by a comfortable margin thanks to Hindus and Christians who voted for him in large numbers. The Prime Minister set Suresh Gopi's campaign in mission mode with a public meeting on 3rd January itself and had attended the marriage of Bhagya, the daughter of the actor.

The star has been given glamorous portfolios like tourism, oil and natural gas, two coveted ministries with vast potential. "But post-swearing in, his performance as a Minister was anything but satisfactory. Suresh Gopi is a major disappointment as a Minister," said Sudheer Damodaran, a political analyst based in Thrissur who had campaigned for the actor in the 2024 election.
