Doctors end cease work partially, rush aids to flood-hit areas

Saturday, 21 September 2024 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

Even in withdrawal of their "41-day cease work" the agitating junior doctors — demanding justice for their raped and murdered colleague of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital — on Friday took out a 42-km "relay Mashaal (torch) procession," and threatened to renew their agitation if the State Government would not fulfill their demands as promised in bilateraldialogues with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

After a general body meeting the doctors said that "considering the hardship of the people and the imminent flood situation in southern parts of Bengal we are partially withdrawing our cease work and resume our Emergency, and other duties from tomorrow that is Saturday … but at the same time we want to "remind the Government that we are not withdrawing out of fear but out of gratitude to the people and sense of service … and if the promises that were made to us are not implemented soon then we will once again go back to our agitation."

On whether they would join the OPD services they said they would not for the time being until the security measures were fully implemented by the Government.

However they said that "we had not discontinued any service completely as we were holding camps outside the hospital premises and serving the patients all these days."

The announcement came after the state had accepted most of their demands - including the Kolkata Commissioner of Police Vineet Goyal and another Deputy Commissioner along with two Directors of Health Department.

The withdrawal also came amid massive floods in south Bengal where health services had become a priority.  Earlier the Government reportedly issued instructions regarding ensuring adequate availability of on-duty rooms, washrooms, CCTVs, deployment of police and security personnel which would include women, mobile police teams for surveillance at night, central helpline and panic buttons and alarms.

"We are overwhelmed by the popular support that we received … partially ending the strike and are rushing aids and services to the flood hit areas of West Midnapore, Hooghly and Birbhum where they will be required the most … our teams of doctors will also serve the flood affected people in these areas personally by opening Abhaya Camps," Dr Debashis Haldar one of the agitating doctors said.

Meanwhile massive processions comprising medical staff and general citizens set off from various parts of Kolkata particularly from High Land Park in south-east Kolkata for Shyam Bazaar crossing in the North shouting "Justice for Abhaya."
