Delhi, the heart of India, is a city that never fails to captivate. It holds within it a unique blend of history, culture and modernity. For those of us who call it home, the structures that define this city are more than just buildings; they are symbols of our shared heritage and memories. Soumen Dutta’s latest exhibition, Contours of Delhi, at Travancore Palace, offers an intimate portrayal of these very landmarks that breathe life into the capital."
What made this collection so remarkable was Dutta’s ability to capture not only the grandeur of Delhi’s architecture but also the very essence of the city itself. Over forty-five paintings were displayed, each portraying the intricate details of Delhi’s iconic landmarks. Using pen and colours, Dutta brought to life the city’s monuments, temples, gardens, bridges, mosques and dargahs, offering a fresh perspective on these architectural marvels. His personal connection to each structure was evident, with his ability to highlight unique features and evoke memories of the past.
Among the most striking works in the exhibition were those of Gole Market, Kota House, the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Lodhi Garden. Each of these sketches felt like a living, breathing piece of Delhi’s history. Dutta didn’t just draw the buildings; he visited each one and captured its true spirit, visualising them from his own unique angle. His portrayal of Aakashvani Bhawan, for instance, showed pigeons fluttering around the building. These birds, much like the structure itself, have long served as messengers, connecting people across generations. Dutta’s ability to combine the past with the present, through subtle details like this, demonstrated his exceptional skill.
What stands out in Dutta's work is his attention to even the smallest details that make each structure so distinctive. It wasn’t just about capturing the architecture, but about making the viewer feel as though they were standing in front of these buildings themselves. His sketches evoke a sense of nostalgia and familiarity for anyone who has walked these streets or visited these monuments. The artist’s dedication was clear: he had visited every single location, allowing himself to fully connect with each place before translating it onto canvas.
For Dutta, Delhi is more than just a city; it is where he has spent most of his life. "Delhi is the heart of the country, and I have lived the majority of my life here. Every structure I encountered had its own unique aura, and it was this connection that I sought to depict in each of my sketches," he shares. His deep emotional bond with Delhi is clearly reflected in his work, making each piece feel personal and intimate. As I walked through the exhibition, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of connection to the city. Dutta’s art invites us to revisit these places, each sketch a gentle reminder of the stories these structures have witnessed over the years. From the bustling streets of Chandni Chowk to the tranquil spaces of Lodhi Gardens, his work allows us to experience Delhi in a way that words alone cannot.
