Monday, 26 June 2023 | PNS | Chandigarh

A woman, who had come to the temple in Panchkula on Sunday, was rescued by the locals after the car she was sitting in was swept away in a river.

The officials said that the woman had come to offer prayers at a temple in Kharak Mangoli, and parked her vehicle on the river bank. Suddenly, the water level in the river rose and her car was washed away in a flash flood while she was still inside it. Locals took hold of the situation and evacuated the woman from the car trapped in the water stream. She was admitted to Sector 6 hospital in Panchkula.

The entire rescue operation was captured in a video that later circulated on social media.

Meanwhile, Mohali Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain said that there is no need to panic in the wake of flash floods reported at Panchkula in Ghaggar river. She assured the residents adjoining Ghaggar river in the district that the administration is fully alert and the Drainage Department has been asked to keep a close tab on the flow of the river for the next few days.

A team, led by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (G), Paramdeep Singh, and including Derabassi SDM Himanshu Gupta and XEN Drainage-cum-Mining and Geology Division Rajat, visited the Bhankharpur bridge and Mubarakpur causeway and took stock of the water level.

ADC Paramdeep Singh, divulging more details, said that the recede in water level was found at Bhankharpur Bridge from four to 3.5 feet, while the flow at Mubarakpur causeway was observed under control.

Drainage-cum-Mining Department has been asked to arrange about 10,000 bags in case of need arises at vulnerable points of Ghaggar embankments at Tiwana, Chandila and Bahori villages, he added.

XEN Drainage-cum-Mining also directed for mapping of crushers for the need of Gatka, ADC further added.

He assured the residents to be alert in case of an increase in flow in the river and to immediately inform at 24x7 district control room number 0172-2219506 and at Sub Divisional Control Room Derabassi, 01762-283224.

In a separate incident near Ghaggar river in Panchkula, a group of eight people found themselves trapped due to the rising water level. However, a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) promptly arrived at the scene and successfully rescued the stranded individuals.

These incidents occurred as a result of heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, causing a sudden surge in the water levels of the rivers. The prompt response from the locals and the NDRF exemplifies the importance of timely and efficient rescue efforts in such critical situations.

Many parts of Haryana received rains, leading to a drop in the minimum temperature, the weather department said on Sunday. In the past 24-hours, Ambala, Karnal, Narnaul, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Gurugram, Kurukshetra and Mohali received rains, according to Met officials.
