District and Sessions Judge Baleswar, Asanta Kumar Das on Friday, convicting a murder accused, sentenced him to life along with Rs 10,000 penalty. The court further ordered one year RI in case of non-realisation of the fine amount.
The convict, Alok Das (36) of Khadigadia village under Simulia police station limits, was arrested in October 2016 on the charge of killing his wife Malati Das, a native of Bhadrak district, following an FIR by the complainant Ghanashyam Das.
The complainant, the brother of the deceased, stating that the marriage of his sister was solemnised one year ago, alleged that the accused was torturing his wife, Malati, physically and mentally soon after the wedding ceremony. He had been demanding Rs 1 lakh as dowry. And due to the unbearable torture, the deceased was residing with them deserting her in-laws’ house.
However, the accused took her along with him from their house a few days before the incident assuring of that he wouldn’t torture her anymore. But he killed her with a sharp-edged weapon.
The accused was tried under various sections of murder of IPC and dowry torture and the court after examining the 16 witnesses and 8 exhibits awarded the punishment of life imprisonment to the accused, said Public Prosecutor Prasanta Mallick.
