The Higher Education department has recently decided to implement a uniform academic calendar for all the State universities in Uttarakhand. Following this decision, the schedule of admission, entrance examination, results and student elections will be the same in all State universities after the proposal is approved by the State government. In addition to this, the requirement of 75 per cent attendance to appear in examinations and 180 days of classes will be implemented mandatorily.
Economics honours student Manya Rathi said, "The department has come up with a good idea to resolve the students’ problems and this decision will definitely benefit the students. It would be good if the government considers further changes like extending the duration of entrance examinations to three consecutive days as this will enable students to appear in other university tests also."
Political honours student Ritika Singh also appreciated the decision taken by the department. She said, “I suffered while getting admission in my university just because my result was not released on time. It would also be better if the government relaxes the 75 per cent attendance criterion for appearing in examinations because college students often do part time jobs and few even indulge in their hobbies due to which it is difficult to manage 75 per cent attendance." Management student Ananya Tiwari also appreciated the decision, adding that the decision is commendable.
Meanwhile, observers point out that the decisions taken by the department have the potential to resolve various issues being faced by the students. However, the result will depend on the efficiency of the execution.
