Out of jail after serving sentence in the 1988 road rage case, former Minister and senior Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu will visit the house of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in Mansa on Monday to meet his parents and express his grief.
Following the meeting, Sidhu is also expected to address the media over the prevailing law and order situation in the State.
“Will reach village Moosa and share my grief with Bai Balkaur Singh Ji at 2 pm tomorrow ... will address the media at his house on the prevailing law & order situation around 4:15 pm”, tweeted Sidhu from his official Twitter handle.
Sidhu Moosewala, who had joined the Congress party ahead of 2022 state assembly polls when Navjot Sidhu was the Punjab unit president, had unsuccessfully contested the Punjab Assembly elections on a Congress ticket from Mansa constituency last year. The globally renowned Punjabi rapper was killed in broad daylight in Mansa district on May 29 — days after Navjot Sidhu was lodged in Patiala Central jail, on May 20, after he surrendered before the Patiala Court in over three-decade old case.
Notably, the Supreme Court in May 2022 had granted one-year rigorous imprisonment to the cricketer-turned-politician in a 1988 road rage case. On April 1, Sidhu walked out of jail after spending 10 months behind bars.
After coming out of Patiala jail on Saturday, Sidhu had announced that he would visit the slain singer’s family to express his grief.
Meanwhile, in another tweet, Navjot Sidhu also expressed gratitude to his supporters who waited for hours outside the jail for his release. “Gratitude ..... take a bow to all those who waited since 10 in the morning till 6 in the evening, against all odds,” he tweeting while sharing a video clip showing people waiting patiently outside jail and then celebrating and giving a rousing welcome to Sidhu.
The video shows his supporters waiting to greet him outside the prison gates yesterday. The video showed them showering petals as the former Punjab Congress chief came out of the Patiala jail.
After being released from jail, Navjot Sidhu launched an attack at the BJP-led central government, saying "democracy is in chains". “Punjab is the shield of this country. When dictatorship came in this country, a revolution also came, led by Rahul Gandhi," Sidhu said.
He alleged that the Centre wants to impose President's rule in the state, now ruled by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). “I want to ask my little brother (Chief Minister) Bhagwant Mann. Why did you fool the people of Punjab? You made tall promises, cracked jokes. But you are just Chief Minister on paper today,” said Sidhu.
