The chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), Geeta Khanna has directed the officials to educate parents and children about child rights regarding their safety. Khanna issued this direction after she recently conducted a surprise inspection at a Madarsa in Dehradun.
Commenting on her dissatisfaction with the arrangements for children at the Madarsa, Khanna stated that she examined the teaching system, toilets, classrooms and teachers during her visit. She said that she discovered the conditions in the Madarsa there were quite poor. Despite the winter chill, the children were studying sitting on the bare floor without slippers or shoes. Additionally, there was no proper arrangement for cleanliness in the toilets, where the children studying in the Madarsa were going barefoot, she said.
The SCPCR chief further said that during the inspection she noticed while traveling on the road outside the Madrasa, a significant issue with the traffic system near a private school in Jeevangarh. It came to her attention that private vehicles were accommodating more passengers than permitted, with 10 to 11 individuals being seated in a vehicle designed for seven passengers. Sensing the seriousness of the matter, Khanna engaged in discussions with the regional transport officer and police officer concerned, urging them to take legal action against this violation in order to ensure the safety of the students. Additionally, she directed the officials to provide comprehensive information on child rights to both the children and their parents. Considering the safety of the students, she further instructed the Education department to promptly arrange fire fighting equipment in all schools.
