As winter unfolds, residents of the district flock to popular picnic spots and tourist destinations. Jubilee Park, Dimna Lake, Tata Steel Zoological Park, Hudco Dam in Telco, Kanderbera, and NH 33 emerge as favorites. However, concerns over recent naxal activities in areas under NH 33 have prompted the East Singhbhum district administration to deploy armed and lathi-wielding policemen, along with executive magistrates, to maintain law and order during the celebrations.
"A dozen guards in each spot, armed and lathi-wielding, will keep the crowd under control and monitor their safety," stated a senior police official, emphasizing the strict security arrangements in anticipation of the approaching New Year celebrations.
While policemen will monitor Burudih Dam in Ghatshila sub-division and Narwah under the Sundernagar police station, local villagers have been entrusted with the responsibility at Dimna.
Despite the influx of holidaymakers, especially from Bengal, Dimna remains a top draw, often becoming crowded during this season. To address law and order issues, last year, 25 policemen were deployed at Dimna, and local youths were trained to cooperate with law enforcement. However, this year, there will be no police contingent at Dimna.
Eve teasing poses a concern at these gatherings, with youngsters attempting to get overly friendly with female picnickers. Popular activities include games like housie, treasure hunt, 'cheetila aata,' singing 'antaksharis,' and unrestrained gossip. Caterers, tent house suppliers, and transport contractors catering to mini-buses thrive during this boom time, easing organizational hassles for picnicking parties.
A police official shared insights, emphasizing the extension of security measures to Narwa Lake and Burudih Dam. For the picturesque Dimna Lake area, the district police have enlisted motorcycle patrols to enhance security for the numerous visitors.
Highlighting the initiative, the official disclosed that 12 motorcops and 30 policemen will be stationed in the Dimna Lake vicinity, equipped with wireless sets, alcohol testing devices, and pistols. Divers would be deputed near Dimna Lake, Hudco Dam, Narwa Dam (in Jadugora) and River Subernarekha banks at Domuhani (Sonari) and Sakchi, along with adequate police force. Magistrates and static police forces will also be deputed at prominent picnic spots including Dimna Lake (Mango), Jubilee Park (Sakchi), Narwapahar (Jadugora), Bhetiya Park (Kadma), Domuhani, Hudco Lake (Telco) and Theme Park (Ghorabandha near Telco).
Police also directed the local police station officials and the highway patrol units to step up their vigil from December 31 afternoon till January 3 to prevent unlawful assembly of youths in city and Highways, rash driving, blaring of sound systems after 10 pm and consumption of liquor on the roads.
