Multiple leg bone fractures treated at Ispat Hospital

The Orthopaedic surgeons of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) have added a new feather to their cap by successfully treating a complex multiple fracture leg bone.  55 year old Sushama Pradhan, wife of Surendra Nath Pradhan, Senior Operator (Cranes), SMS-I, was admitted in the Orthopaedic Ward of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) on 12th April 2023 after she met with a road accident. She had sustained multiple pieces fracture of left distal femur.

Preoperative planning, an essential prerequisite for the success of orthopaedic procedures was done by a team of orthopaedic surgeons of IGH led by Dr L K Biswal, CMO (M&HS).

A 6 hour long surgery of the left distal femur surgery was done on 20th  April 2023 by Dr Daulat Saraf, Senior Consultant (Orthopaedic Surgeon) assisted by nursing Sister Sunanda Besra, Nursing Sister Godhuli Behera and Nursing Brother Kamlakar Ambati , Maheswar Nayak, Senior Hospital Technician, Sridhar Sindria  Hospital Technician and Indrajit Brinet, Hospital Attendant.

The long surgery was although very challenging but went uneventful. Skilled anaesthesia was administered  by Dr B K Naik, Additional CMO, Dr Smita Kujur, Consultant (Anesthesia), Dr Kasi, Dr Vandana, Dr Jinolal, the DNB doctors and team members of Department  of Anaesthesiology. During surgery assistance was provided by Senior Nursing Sister  Incharge (Operation Theatre – I), Advanti Minz and team of technicians, CSSD technician and dressers. Meticulous preoperative and post operative support was provided by Marryanna Lakra, Senior Nursing Sister, Surgery Ward In-charge and the team comprising Dressers and Hospital Attendants.

 The patient is now able to bend her left knee joint as she is undergoing   physiotherapy in IGH on a daily basis. It is to be noted that several such cases involving intensive care and sophisticated treatment are being referred by hospitals from different parts of State and beyond to Ispat General Hospital which is equipped with state-of- the-art medical facilities. The doctors and paramedical staff have been exhibiting exceptional commitment, zeal and professional acumen to treat these critical cases successfully.
