A large number of people are expected to attend the Mool Niwas Swabhiman Maharally slated to be held in Dehradun today. The Congress, Left parties, AAP and the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal have extended their support to the rally. According to the convenors of the rally, the people will gather at Parade Ground at 10 AM on Sunday. From there the rally will proceed to the statehood martyrs memorial via Convent School, SBI Chowk, Buddha Chowk, Government Doon Medical College hospital and Tehsil Chowk. The rally is being held in support of the demands for 1950 as the domicile cut off date and stricter land laws in the State. The supporters of the rally are demanding strict land laws in Uttarakhand on the lines of neighbouring Himachal Pradesh. This and the demand for 1950 as the cut off year for domicile status have elicited considerable support from the people, especially from the mountainous regions of the State. Those supporting these demands state that these changes are necessary to ensure that the people of Uttarakhand have the first right to the resources- land, forests and water of the State. They also believe that enacting the sought measures will boost employment generation for the people of the State. None of the national and regional political parties in the State have opposed these demands, especially with the Lok Sabha elections to be held in the not too distant future. The State government has recently formed a drafting committee headed by the additional chief secretary to examine the report submitted by the land laws committee to the government. The BJP has assured the people that its government will follow due procedure to bring about strict land laws in the State.
