It looks electricity department has not learnt any lesson from Musabani and Chakulya tragedy where 5 and 2 wild elephants got electrocuted to death respectively only this November.
There are low hanging wires all across the tiger reserve Palamu and a complaint about it has also been sent to the GM electricity months ago for its correctional measures but till date there is no initiative to it from the electricity department.
P K Jena deputy director north division of the tiger reserve Palamu said "It's months now when I wrote to the GM electricity regarding faulty electricity lines and also about its low hanging with a request for its early correction but it is yet to bring any result so far."
Jena said "It's terrible to have a low hanging wire. Such episodes are at 50 locations alone in the north division of the tiger reserve Palamu."
Jena claimed the vulnerable points where the electricity wires are dangerously sagging are fact based with coordinates available for it. The electricity department can't afford to deny our ground and genuine complaints he said.
No
Similarly deputy director south division of the tiger reserve Palamu Kumar Ashish said "This acute problem of low hanging wire is rampant in the south division of PTR. Labher location is its handy example. Mundu and Maromar locations in the South division of PTR have identical issue."
Sources reminded that PTR too has instances of death of elephants by electrocution in the past.
It used to be at some such locations of sagging electricity wire where were bamboos and elephants in a bid for bamboo there, used to get electrocuted there. The electrocution tragedy of the elephants occurred right in the Betla National Park in the past.
Electricity wire ought to be 6 meters above the ground as only then trunk of the elephant will not be touching it.
Sources said the electricity wires in the PTR are as low as 4 meters above the ground at some sites in the PTR clearly inviting imminent casualty of bigger animal.
It's true the electricity wires are insulated but nevertheless it's lying low is never any good for the wild life for various reasons like it may result in uprooting of the electricity pole if the elephant drags it or pulls it which may come straight on the elephant or any other wild life present then at the site.
