Jamshedpur DC distributes blankets among needy on city streets

Thursday, 21 December 2023 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In a compassionate and hands-on approach to address the impending cold wave, Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri took to the streets, distributing blankets among shelter homes, the homeless, rickshaw-pullers, and other vulnerable individuals on Tuesday night. During his night tour of the area, he visited multiple locations, including the shelter home at JP Setu Bus Stand, Baridih Tempo Stand, New Court, and the Leprosy Ashram Baradwari, ensuring that the most in-need populations received warmth during the chilly nights.

While distributing blankets,  Bhajantri not only inquired about the health of the recipients but also issued warnings about the intensifying cold weather, advising them to take precautions against frost. In a comprehensive approach, he gathered information about Sarvajan Pension, Ration Card, and promptly addressed the concerns raised by the residents of the Leprosy Ashram Baradwari, showcasing a commitment to resolving community issues.

Expressing a proactive stance,  Bhajantri instructed officials on the spot to expedite the shift of individuals sleeping in the open to nearby night shelters. Additionally, he directed municipal body and block officials to inspect and ensure that no person sleeps in open places, emphasizing the importance of providing shelter to everyone, especially during the cold wave.

Bhajantri issued a public appeal, urging residents, particularly the elderly and children, to stay indoors during the morning and late evening, highlighting the potential increase in cold temperatures in the coming days. He advised citizens to stay informed about the weather through local newspapers, radio, or television and recommended wearing appropriate warm clothing, covering the head, face, hands, and feet when venturing outside.

To further safeguard the community,  Bhajantri provided crucial guidelines for maintaining warmth, including consuming nutritious food and hot beverages. He stressed the importance of proper ventilation when using burning lanterns, lamps, and coal fireplaces in closed rooms and emphasized the need to switch off heaters and blowers after use to prevent potential hazards.

Directing the officers of the District Social Security Cell,  Bhajantri ensured arrangements for the distribution of blankets at public places, including intersections. He instructed officers to inspect their respective areas during the night, providing adequate blankets and making every effort to guide individuals to night shelters, ensuring their protection from the cold.

District Public Relations Officer  Rohit Kumar, Assistant Director Social Security, and other officials were present during this commendable initiative, reflecting the district's commitment to the welfare of its residents during challenging weather conditions.

As winter's chill tightens its grip on the city, the administration has taken a compassionate initiative to address the needs of the vulnerable population. The Deputy Commissioner led a team of officials and volunteers to distribute blankets across various shelter homes, leprosy ashrams, and urban areas, focusing on ensuring the well-being of the elderly, children, and those in need.

In response to the plummeting temperatures, the administration emphasized the importance of staying indoors during the early morning and late evening hours and encouraged the elderly and children to wear warm clothing when venturing outside. The distribution of blankets aims to provide a crucial layer of protection for those who may be exposed to the harsh winter conditions.
