The Auraiya police arrested a sub-inspector for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman over the past three years.
The sub-inspector has been identified as Mukesh Kumar, 28, who was the investigating officer in a dowry harassment case, filed by the woman in 2020 against her husband and in-laws.
Superintendent of Police, Auraiya, Charu Nigam suspended Mukesh Kumar.
“The accused has been booked on rape charges. The woman has been sent for a medical examination and further investigations are underway,” she said.
Meanwhile, taking advantage of gross negligence of the prisoner guards, an inmate managed to flee from the district jail in Etawah on Saturday. After several hours, the district administration was informed about the matter. Five prisoner guards have been suspended for negligence.
Reports said that Ajay Kumar, a resident of Jariapur village in Bidhuna police station area of Auraiya district, was arrested by the Auraiya police in a case of kidnapping of a girl and was sent to district jail on October 27 last. On Saturday morning, Ajay was taken to the jail garden along with other prisoners for work. It is said that a prisoner guard handed over the garden’s key to Ajay, instructing him to lock it after completing his duties. Seizing the opportunity, the accused managed to escape from the jail.
Sources said when Ajay was found missing during routine counting of the prisoners, the district administration was informed.
Upon receiving information, Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma arrived at the jail and interrogated all the prison guards. During the interrogation, he discovered negligence on the part of the guards.
The SSP also learned that a woman, believed to be Ajay’s girlfriend, had been visiting the jail to meet Ajay for the past two to three days and had assisted him in escaping from the compound.
Senior Jail Superintendent of Fatehgarh Central Jail, PN Pandey suspended prisoner guards Shrikant Awasthi, Sachin Kumar, Sanju Yadav, Chinmay Kaka and Keshav Kumar.
The SSP said that the investigation had revealed negligence on the part of the prisoner guards. Four teams have been deployed to search the accused and he would be arrested soon, he added.
