International Migrants Day was celebrated at the University Law College on Monday. On this occasion, Principal Rashmi Pradhan expressed that International Migrants Day, observed on December 18, is a day to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions, dedication, courage, and strength of migrants worldwide. It's a day to remember those who decide to leave their homes in search of better opportunities or to escape emergencies.
This day emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the rights and prosperity of migrants globally. It reminds us of the positive impact migrants have on host communities and home countries through their diverse cultures, skills, and perspectives, enhancing global understanding and cooperation. Dr. Urmila Kumari mentioned that according to World Health Organization (WHO) data from May 2022, there are over a billion migrants globally, constituting approximately one in eight people worldwide. Among them, 281 million are international migrants, and 84 million are forcibly displaced.
Student Abhishek Basant highlighted that on December 18, 2000, the United Nations General Assembly declared it as International Migrants Day. Allegedly, the day was chosen to commemorate the rights of all migrant workers and their families, adopting the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families in 1990. Student Aparajita emphasized the necessity of prioritizing the physical and mental health and well-being of migrants as an integral part of addressing global challenges.
Student Arfi Khan stated that including migrants in national public health policies, eliminating disparities in health professionals, services, and programs, and establishing sustainable structures for migrants' participation in health projects have been emphasized. Teacher Dr. Lakshmi Singh expressed gratitude. Many students were present at this event.
