A challenging rescue operation was underway in the Rengali forest in Sambalpur district by Fire Service personnel till late evening on Tuesday to save an infant who was found stuck in an open bore-well.
The child, suspected to be a newborn, was believed to have been dumped in the bore-well by some unscrupulous element.
The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) was assisting the fire brigade personnel in the rescue mission. A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRAF) personnel also rushed to the spot for the rescue operation.
Fire Service Director General Sudhanshu Sarangi informed that high-precision Victim-Location Cameras (VLCs), also known as thermal cameras, were flown from Cuttack for monitoring the condition of the infant.
The infant was stuck in around 15 to 20-feet depth in the bore-well, from where its cries were being heard, informed sources. It was not clear how the infant got into the well, which is far from human habitation.
Report said a 20-feet pit was dug near the bore-well to reach the stuck child.
However, no one had come forward to claim the child.
“Since we hear cries of the infant, we are quite optimistic that we’ll be able to save its life,” said doctors present at the site.
