BREACH IN OPGC ASH BUND, SLURRY FLOODS VILLAGE (Pix)
Jharsuguda: Panic prevailed after a major breach of a fly-ash pond of the Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC)’s thermal plant in Ib Valley of Jharsuguda district led to overflowing of the ash bund towards neighbouring villages on Saturday. A 20-feet breach led to collapse of the ash bund wall which in turn led to flooding of toxic slurry towards areas in the vicinity. While the ash water flooded farmlands on the outskirts of Saradhapali, the slurry had started entering the village till reports last came in. Many scared people reportedly prepared to leave the village with their belongings.
JHARSUGUDA-BBSR FLIGHT FROM DEC 16
Jharasuguda: The Alliance Air has announced revival of flight operations between Jharsuguda and Bhubaneswar from December 16. Jharsuguda Airport Director Sandeep Tiwari on Saturday outlined the flight schedule for Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The flight is scheduled to depart from Jharsuguda at 5:30 pm, reaching Bhubaneswar at 5:55 pm.
YOUTH ELECTROCUTED WHILE CHARGING MOBILE PHONE
Nuapada: A 20-year-old youth was electrocuted while charging his mobile phone in Sihinamunda village under Komna block in Nuapada district on Friday. Mukesh Kata of Karangabhata village under the Komna police limits in the district had come to his relative at Sihinamunda. While charging his phone, he suffered an electric shock. He was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital, where he was declared dead.
MAN KILLED IN BEAR ATTACK IN NABARANGPUR
Nabarangpur: A man was mauled to death by a wild bear in the forest near Bhartasiuni in Nabrangpur district. The incident came to light on Saturday. The deceased was a contractor of the Bhratmala Project in the area. The bear attacked the man while he had gone to the forest to attend nature’s call. Police on being informed reached the spot and initiated a probe into the incident.
FRIENDLY CRICKET AT DAV CHANDRASEKHARPUR (Pix)
Bhubaneswar: Like previous years, a friendly cricket match of 20-20 overs between Chairman XI and Principal XI was organised at the DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar, on Saturday. Chairman of the School Santosh Kumar Satapathy inaugurated the match in the presence of Principal Dr Sujata Sahu, Coordinator Indira Bhattacharya and Academic Supervisors. The Principal XI won the match by reaching the given target 140 runs in 19.2 overs and losing 7 wickets.
PANGOLIN SEIZED; 2 HELD BY STF IN RAYAGADA
Bhubaneswar: The Special Task Force (STF) arrested two wildlife criminals and rescued a live pangolin in Rayagada district on Saturday. Those arrested were identified as Samsan Raita and Asmin Sabar. They were nabbed following a raid on NH-326 (Brahapur-Rayagada) under the Padampur police station. Both the accused were produced before the SDJM Court in Gunupur and the pangolin has been handed over to the DFO for custody.
