In a recent hearing at the Jharkhand High Court, displeasure was expressed over the state government's failure to submit a status report on compensation payments to victims of the 1984 Sikh riots. The court, presided over by Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra, directed the government to provide a detailed report within three days, specifying the amount disbursed to victims in various districts. Notably, the court questioned the non-allocation of available compensation of Rs 1 crore 20 lakh from the emergency fund to Bokaro district. The government was also instructed to present the commission's report on compensation, which was not submitted during the hearing.
The case, filed by Satnam Singh Gambhir, President of All India Sikh Students Federation, is scheduled for the next hearing on December 12. The court's intervention follows its September 15 order urging the government to take action based on the commission's recommendations.
