Govt to organise Road Safety Fortnight from December 15

In order to reduce road accidents and fatalities during the winter season, the Yogi government is organising the 2nd Road Safety Fortnight from December 15 to December 31, to raise awareness among the public about  traffic rules and safety standards.

During the Road Safety Fortnight, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) will conduct various activities, including awareness campaigns, thorough inspections, counselling for drivers and conductors, and regular health check-ups for drivers.

The Road Safety Fortnight, starting from Friday, will be inaugurated by Transport Minister (Independent Charge) Daya Shankar Singh at 1090 Chauraha in Lucknow.

The Transport Corporation will conduct thorough inspections at depots/workshops and on the routes through the use of breathalyzer. The buses will be outshed only after a technical inspection of all the buses of the Transport Corporation. Checking of headlights, backlights, indicators, rearview mirror, LED, and seat belts of the Corporation and contracted buses will be performed.

Inspection of speed control devices on buses, verification of drivers’ driving licences, checking of the crew’s uniforms, applying reflective tape on Corporation and contracted buses, providing information to drivers about the use of high beam/low beam headlights during night bus operations, and similar activities will be ensured.

Drivers will be motivated not to consume drugs. Thorough inspections of buses on the road, along with counselling and training, will be conducted regarding road safety for all drivers/conductors. Under the counselling and training, CMVR rules and information about the safe operation of buses on expressways and other highways in current conditions, lane driving, overtaking, breaking, etc., will be provided. Regional managers and service managers will also assist in actively conducting programs in at least three depots during the Road Safety Campaign.

Messages regarding road safety and the safety of women will be broadcast through LED TVs and installed soundboxes on all bus stations and buses. Each day during the fortnight, the dissemination of road safety and traffic rules will be carried out with the playing of patriotic songs through sound amplifiers.

Drivers will be shown short films related to safe operation, driving buses at prescribed speeds, using seat belts, avoiding the use of mobile phones while driving, and avoiding negligence of all kinds. Passengers present at bus stations will be made aware of road safety.

Through the health cards provided by the headquarters to all regular/contractual drivers of the corporation, eye examinations and general health check-ups, including examinations for vision, colour blindness, blood pressure, random blood sugar, etc., will be conducted in government hospitals. The health examination and eye test for drivers will be conducted according to the arrangement determined by the chief medical officer.
